The Municipality of Jasper will be patching the low spots and lowering sprinkler heads on the Centennial Soccer pitch for the 2016 season to allow minor sports games and other sporting events to take place. As both soccer and rugby are looking to use the field in April, sand will be used to level the play surface, as grass cannot grow this early in the season. Temporary use restrictions may come into effect to protect the playing surface.
Plans for 2017
Municipal crews will continue to monitor field condition and perform repairs in anticipation of a complete field overhaul in 2017, with funding assistance from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. The plan is to have the exchange lands ready to accommodate user groups in 2017 while the new Centennial field re-construction occurs.
To successfully manage the challenges around short growing seasons and too few sports fields available in our community, the Municipality will develop a field use policy to ensure our assets remain in good condition. Decisions and choices around priority uses and field limitations (weather conditions, frequency of use, etc.) will be required to ensure our fields remain in good condition – otherwise they may become unusable in the future.
